The Road to Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen 2018 – Miss Glendale’s Outstanding Teen, Chloe Hiller

Next month several young girls will be vying for the title of Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen. One of these young women is Miss Glendale’s Outstanding Teen, Chloe Hiller. She is a determined young woman, who is ready to take the Miss Arizona OT stage by storm. Continue reading to learn more about Chloe and her journey to the crown!

What does being Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen 2018 mean to you?
There is no greater time than the present for girls to feel empowered. When I was entering my pre-teen years, I began showing the signs of low self-esteem and low confidence and becoming a part of this organization as a teen helped me overcome those negative feelings; that is something that I will forever be grateful for. Becoming Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen 2018 would offer a larger platform for me to continue my efforts of inspiring girls to become leaders and turn down that negative voice inside of them. It means spreading the message of empowering girls to dream, believe and achieve!

Tell our readers a bit about how you prepared for competing in the Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen system? What challenges did you face in preparing for Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen?

My director and I reviewed each phase of competition and put together a plan. I do high intensity interval training workouts and take dance classes a few times a week to stay in shape as well as to rehearse my talent. I also review my pageant notes daily and practice interview questions every chance I get, whether I am at an event or in the car with my Mom. My biggest challenge is getting enough sleep because I like to stay up late reviewing my notes and watching videos after I finish my homework.

What has been three of your most memorable experiences, since being crowned Miss Glendale’s Outstanding Teen?
I organized my first annual Girls: Dream, Believe and Achieve vision board party earlier this year. I created a positive environment for girls to visually lay out their dreams and talk about how they could achieve them. Volunteering at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital “1 Darn Cool School Dance” was a really fun and memorable event. It is important to me to connect with the community and I enjoy being an ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. I will also never forget our Miss North Phoenix/ Miss Glendale team photo shoot – it was such a beautiful day with my sister titleholders, our director and one of the most amazing photographers in Arizona. I am very thankful for our sponsors and everyone that made the day possible.

How have you striven to not only promote your personal platform, but also help raise money for the MAO’s national platform, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals?
My personal platform is Empowering Girls to Dream, Believe and Achieve! Since overcoming bullying and low self-confidence as a pre-teen, it has been my personal mission to inspire girls to make good choices, have positive self-esteem, and gain leadership skills. I created hashtag #girlsdreambelieveandachieve to create a culture of young women who embody this motto as well as to support and promote my personal platform on social media. I also spearheaded my first annual Girls: Dream, Believe and Achieve vision board party. Inspirational guest speakers were in attendance, including our current Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen and proceeds raised were donated to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

With the recent news which has been brought up in regards to the former Miss America Org. board, what do you hope the future of the MAO holds with their new Chairwoman, Gretchen Carlson?
I believe the future of MAO will highlight the importance of empowering women. I think the local, state and national titleholders will be encouraged to stand up for what we believe in because Gretchen Carlson and the board members genuinely understand this organization. I hope there will be more emphasis on how contestants are making an impact in our communities through our platform work so the public realizes that the Miss America Organization is more than just a televised beauty pageant.

What advice do you have for young women who are looking to step into the Miss America Organization?
It is important to be a good planner and to stay organized. My advice is to choose a platform and commit to serving the community and doing platform work before you even compete in your first local pageant. I created #girlsdreambelieveandachieve when I was a pre-teen and started attending events and volunteering with organizations that supported my passion for empowering girls.

How do you define yourself as a role-model for others?
Staying immersed in positive environments has allowed me to be myself. I was one of four winners of the Girls Rule Foundation “Brilliant, Beautiful and Bold Role Model Award” last year. I earned this award through hours of hard work networking and connecting with others and by sharing the tools and resources I gained to overcome the negative thoughts and feelings I once had about myself. Empowering girls to become leaders and turn down the negative voice inside them by sharing positive posts and being a leader in my community is how I define myself as a role-model.

What do you think is the biggest challenge which is facing the young generation of America today? And how can we work together to overcome it?
The biggest challenge is allowing ourselves to be distracted by technology. We tend to get caught up in what our peers and celebrities are posting on social media and looking to these posts for validation of who we are. Overcoming this distraction is two-fold; first we should set time limits on how much and when we are online for leisure to ensure we are taking care of our responsibilities and living in the moment. Next, we should focus on looking at positive and uplifting posts and not comparing ourselves to what people want us to see because it is not always the full picture. I created the #girlsdreambelieveandachieve movement to inspire and encourage others through my social media posts.

Regardless of whoever wins the title of Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen 2018, what is one goal you have for the new title-holder, which you hope she is able to accomplish during her reign?
Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen 2018 should take advantage of the opportunity to promote her platform during her reign. She should keep a positive and consistent social media presence and create partnerships between Miss Arizona and organizations that place an emphasis on leadership, education, and empowering girls and women.

What have you learned from your current state title-holder, Dimon Sanders, which you will take with you, if you were to win the title of Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen?
I have learned from Dimon that saying “yes” as often as possible to attending events and appearances is a great way to have a successful year. She has been an amazing role model during her reign; she constantly promotes her platform by attending events to share her story about being in foster care and the benefits of CASAs. She is supportive of the local titleholders and keeps open communication with us and also attends the events that we organize to promote our platforms. Dimon is also a wonderful state ambassador for Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Bravura is an artistic word for exceptional. What makes you a “bravura” candidate for Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen?
I am a bravura candidate because girls need guidance and a relatable role model they can lean on, and as Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen I aspire to be that person while encouraging them to dream big, believe in themselves and achieve their goals. As a teen who experienced bullying and poor self-esteem, I am eager to share my story of being a girl that people made fun of, to now having the confidence and acceptance to embrace who I am. As Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen, I will continue to share the tools and resources I have gained to overcome my own negative thoughts and feelings and empower girls to become leaders.

What words of advice do you have for the new class of contestants who are getting ready to compete for your title?
My advice to the future class of 2019 contestants is to remember that the on-stage competition is one night and the core of what pageantry in the Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen organization stands for is service. Be prepared to work hard and be open to feedback from your directors to help you create a purposeful journey to state during your time as a local titleholder.

What words of thanks do you have for those who have supported you on this journey?
I can’t even put into words how much I appreciate the support of my parents, my director, my friends and my sister titleholders during this journey. This is my second year competing for the title of Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen and I am so thankful that I have each of them to encourage me and help me stay focused on the road ahead. I could not be a successful titleholder without them.
