The Benefits of Yoga

I hope you had a great weekend! On most weekends, I like to kick back and relax after a hectic week of work, school and running around in the fast-paced environment that we have over here in New York City. When I’m in town, I like to take yoga classes at my gym to “recharge my batteries”. I usually take a type of class called Vinyasa Yoga. The term “vinyasa” refers to the alignment of breath and movement, a method which turns fixed yoga postures into a dynamic flow. During class, each yogi (man) or yogini (woman) practices sitting “asana”, which refers to a mastery of sitting still that is firm but relaxed for extended periods of time. In Vinyasa Yoga, however, the flow of each asana is faster so positions have a dynamic flow.Vinyasa Yoga or Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is often promoted as a popular version of classical Indian yoga. Ashtanga in Sanskrit refers to “eight limbed”, which can be found in the Yoga Sutras. The eight aspects* or “limbs” are the following: Continue reading

He also won the Tennis Masters Cup in 2008 and a Bronze Medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. His 2011 record was 37-0 making him the number 1 tennis player in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). ESPN commentator and former coach of Andre Agassi, Brad Gilbert remarked, “He has massively improved his serve, his fitness, and he’s hitting his forehand a lot better. I’ve never seen anybody move better on a tennis court in my life. He’s so flexible, he can make impossible gets with ease” (Source: WSJ.com).

Studio Cycling

Hello, friends! I feel so amazing inside and out after taking a Studio Cycling class last night at my local gym, Equinox. Not only was the entire class really into it, the instructor was very enthusiastic and motivating. He blasted pop and hip hop music and even got out of his seat to dance a few times as we rode. The music really got me to push hard on my bike and I actually came out drenched with sweat! Continue reading

Sugar Addiction

Recently, I’ve been researching sugar addiction because no matter what I do, I can’t seem to control myself when it comes to eating sweet foods, especially chocolate. I always feel that I need to eat something sweet right after a meal. People who want to lose weight or control their diets to gain muscle or tone should be very careful of their sugar intake. Therefore, I’m attempting to cut back on sugary foods. In my previous post, The Essence of Water, I mentioned how I was successful in giving up soda but still have trouble controlling myself when it comes to eating sweet foods.

Greek Yogurt

Hello, all! It’s a beautiful winter day here in NYC- a much needed break from the very cold weather we’ve been experiencing recently and I’m actually loving the temperature right now! In my previous post titled, “My Favorite Snacks“, I wrote about the importance of daily nutrition. On some mornings, I like to have a small breakfast of yogurt with berries mixed with granola before I head off to work. Below is the nutritional value in my bowl of yogurt and berries:

Relationships Are Key

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen

Yesterday, as I watched the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens football game, I couldn’t help but think of the Patriot’s QB, Tom Brady’s gorgeous wife, Gisele Bundchen. In fashion circles, she is known as “The Body” and seems to credit Mr. Brady himself for inspiring her to get back into shape after giving birth to their son, Benjamin. Of course, it has a lot to do with genetics, however, a person’s mindset and the relationships they have are very important as well.

Sports Business

Two days ago, I was accepted into New York University’s Masters in Sports Business program (yay!). I’ve always been a sports fan and even played Varsity Lacrosse for three years in highschool. Growing up in the 90′s and following the Chicago Bulls, the Dallas Cowboys and WNBA games with my dad was just so magical and exciting. During playoff games, I would sit smack dab in front of our new big screen TV and literally scream my head off at every play while my dad would laugh at my frenzied passion. Ah, those were the days.
