The Road to Miss Delaware 2019 – Hillary May, Miss Hockessin 2019
Now the title of "Miss Hockessin," is one which is quite familiar to anyone who reads Bravura Magazine, as we did am amazing photoshoot with former Miss Hockessin 2018, Becca, who also happened to be first-runner up for Miss Delaware 2018! What a perfect lead into our next feature, for our series in "The Road to Miss Delaware 2019," Hillary May, who is the reigning Miss Hockessin 2019! What have you learned from your current Miss Delaware, Joanna Wicks, which you hope to carry with you, regardless of whomever wins the title of Miss Delaware.
Last year, Joanna won the first local she competed in and then won Miss Delaware. I’m currently in the same position having won the first ever Delaware local I competed in. I thought for a long time that this put me at a disadvantage for states but she has assured me that it helps with presenting your true self because you don’t get lost in the motions. Regardless of the outcome of the competition, I hope to never get lost in the motions and always present my true self!
What is one goal you hope that the new Miss Delaware will accomplish during her reign?
I hope the new Miss Delaware can help build and promote the MDSO brand alongside her own personal platform. She is not only a representative of her passions but also of the organization and I think that can get lost sometimes.
If you could go back in the past, and give yourself one piece of advice when you first stepped into pageantry, what would it be?
Given that I’m still in that phase, the thing I try to remember most is why I began in the first place: to gain skills, connections, and a platform to advocate for the things I’m passionate about. I never want to forget that!
Share with us your platform and why it’s important to you.
My platform is mental health and suicide awareness. Having been personality affected by suicide and fighting my own battles with depression and anxiety I want to help educate the world on prevention, treatment, and healing processes. I believe when we focus on the well-being and happiness of individuals we will see benefits in our communities as a whole! I work with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on education, advocacy, and prevention of mental illness and suicide. I also work with Supporting KIDDS, a grief center for children 5-16. I’m a group therapy facilitator for families who have lost a parent or child. I think it’s so important to remember those who still remain after a loss and help them heal as well.
“Bravura” is an artistic word for exceptional; what makes you a ‘bravura’ candidate for Miss Delaware?
Every candidate involved in the MDSO is bravura in my opinion! I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know these amazing women and what makes each of them exceptional! Through my life experiences and service work, I’ve been able to empathize with and touch so many lives. I think that ability to make deep connections is what would make me a great Miss Delaware.
