What I’ve learned from the Miss America program: I’ve learned that it is really about the personal growth that occurs while competing, not the outcome. Throughout that journey, I grew, gained invaluable experience from competing, participated in the mock interview practice, surrounded myself with other motivated and talented women, which allowed me to learn about myself and push my limits.
Growing up with parents who are educators, I learned early on the importance of strong literacy skills. I also recognized that not every child has the chance to live in a home filled with books and parents who read to them each night. With my platform, “Open Books, Open Opportunity: Promoting Literacy in Our Communities,” I have had the chance to improve on these issues by connecting with libraries and schools, promoting both early literacy and adult literacy programs, and working to trigger a love of reading across all ages.
