The Road to Miss New Jersey – Miss Eastern Shore – Myra McCann
As we continue our “Road to Miss New Jersey” series, our next contestant is Miss Eastern Shores, Myra McCann.
Please tell us why you chose to compete for your local county’s title?
Competing for the local title of Miss Eastern Shore was an opportunity I knew I needed to take. This is my last year of eligibility, my last time to go to Miss New Jersey. When I thought about competing for the title, I thought of the reasons I wanted to hold a local title. I wanted to continue making a difference in my community; which would allow me to continue spreading my platform to others and continue working with the special needs community.
As a recent graduate of Saint Joseph’s University, the scholarship was more than helpful. The Miss America Organization has the most scholarship opportunities for women in the country. My education has always been extremely important to me, especially as an educator. Having the Miss America Organization, and the Miss New Jersey Education Foundation helping support me, allowed me to continue my education! This is something that I will always be grateful for!
What do you plan to accomplish if you were to win the title of Miss NJ 2016?
The job of Miss New Jersey 2016 would nothing less than a lifelong dream come true! The Job of Miss New Jersey opens doors and ways to expand your platform. My platform, “ Making a Special Difference”, is something I would love to share statewide. I have plans to expand programs that are already in place and start new programs. These programs would allow for children and adults with special needs to become more involved in our community. They would also allow for individuals without a connection to special needs, to become involved and create a bond and connection with the beautiful community.
The job of Miss New Jersey is as a role model position. Being a role model to young girls that have a dream is something so special. To have someone look up to you and think, “I could do that too” is an amazing feeling. I would take my year as Miss New Jersey and encourage girls and boys to chase after their dreams! It is so important to show our youth that anything is possible if you put your mind to it!

this particular one.|
My platform is called “Making a Special Difference”. My platform is all about the involvement, acceptance, and understanding of those in our communities with special needs. I was a senior in high school when I realized that my own peers didn’t know anything about what it meant to have special needs, even though we had a special needs classroom right down the hall. I started to see that this topic was not something that was talked about ever. I grew up with family members that have special needs and my mom has always been a special educator. To me, this subject was something I experienced on a daily basis. I saw a need to bring it into the daily lives of students throughout our state. While holding local titles, I have shared why it is important to become involved with our special needs community. I explain that most of these programs lack volunteers, and how as a community, we could change that problem easily.
Students feel important when they see that they are needed to help make a difference. To me, the beauty of my platform is that everyone involved, benefits. Proms, sports programs, and mentoring programs are some of the programs I’m involved in and encourage the students to join.
“Bravura” is an artistic word for exceptional; in your own words, tell us what makes you ‘bravura’!
After a lot of thinking, I think what makes me “Bravura” is that I literally live my platform. My platform is about special needs and being involved with those that have special needs. I work in a classroom that services young adults with special needs. I have family members with special needs. And I also have dyslexia. Having such a personal connection to my platform has made it easy for me to spread the word and share my passion with others.
