For those who may not be familiar with you, tell our readers a bit about yourself and your background within the pageant world.
I am a junior at Fairhaven High School where I am enrolled in all honors and AP classes and a three-season athlete. “Go Blue Devils”. I am also on a competitive dance team. My love of pageantry started when I competed in my hometown’s Jr. Miss Apple Peach pageant in 2014. I won that pageant and became officially hooked. The following year I started my journey in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen program. After nearly a year and a half of learning and training I won the title of Miss New Bedford’s Outstanding Teen 2017. They weren’t kidding when they told me it was going to be a year like no other. During my year as Miss New Bedford’s Outstanding Teen, I had the honor to represent the city of New Bedford at so many events particularly the Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen Pageant where I placed 1st runner up.  I relinquished my title in January. January 13th to be exact. I moved forward to the Miss Boston’s Outstanding Teen 2018 pageant where I was honored to win that title. I am feeling so fortunate to represent another amazing local organization going into the Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen pageant on April 8th.

The four points of the Miss America crown represent: service, scholarship, style, and success. Which one is the most important to you and why?
Personally, I feel the most important part of the crown is service. This program has afforded me so many opportunities to do just this from across my community and across Massachusetts. The Miss America Organization is all about giving back not only to your community but to women in this organization; service is what being a title holder is about.

During Carly Fisher ’s reign, what is one characteristic you’ve seen her bring forth as Miss  Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen, and which do you hope to emulate if you were to win the title?
The characteristic that I feel that Carly brought forth is her genuine personality. She is a real girl and doesn’t try to be someone she’s not and if I were to win the title I would hope that I would stay true to myself.

What have you learned from our current Miss Massachusetts’ Outstanding Teen, Carly Fisher, that can help you be a better outstanding teen?
I think Carly took advantage of every opportunity she could to make a difference and changed lives one person at a time. As Miss Massachusetts Outstanding Teen it is important to leave a positive and happy atmosphere wherever you are, and I think Carly did this beautifully throughout her year.

Please share with our readers your platform and why you’ve chosen to advocate for it.
My platform is entitled “Big Tobacco’s Final Hour” lung cancer awareness and education. I selected this platform for a very personal reason. In 2013 my grandmother was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer which metastasized into her spine. The doctors told us that if she didn’t start treatment right away that she wouldn’t make it through the summer so of course she started treatment right away. This was completely devastating to our family because she has never been a smoker but she grew up in a home full of smokers. This is when I got a bit angry. My grandmother is fighting for her life due to no fault of her own. I took that anger and put is into working for her cause. I contacted the American Lung Association which opened several doors for me within their organization. I have climbed approximately 2500 steps and raised about $3,000 for lung cancer research. I am proud to say that it is 2018 and 2 experimental chemotherapy medications later and my grandmother is still with us. Her will to live has inspired me to live life to the fullest and to never give up on my dreams.

If you were to win the title of Miss Massachusetts’  Outstanding Teen, how do you hope to better educate your generation about your platform and the importance it holds?
I am currently involved with a statewide leadership team entitled the 84% project. The 84% represented the 84% of teens that refrained from using tobacco products at the projects inception in 2007. I am happy to say the number is now up to 92% at this time. It is a teen led program that helps to fight big tobacco companies by educating younger generations of the hazards of tobacco products and now e-cigarettes. I speak at schools, conferences, and advocate at the state house to help future generations understand the dangers of tobacco use.

Tell us about your talent and the decisions you made in proceeding with this talent.
I am an Irish step dancer so I will be performing a hard shoe Irish dance. I have been training for nearly 12 years now and I absolutely love to share part of my heritage with the audience.

Having been in pageants and after winning a local title, what advice do you have for those who want to start competing in the MAO system?
Go for it! You won’t regret it. Whether you win or not, you will grow as an individual and your confidence will go through the roof. Take in every moment and learn from every moment. You will meet some of the most caring, intelligent and passionate girls who will go on to be your lifelong friends. This program gives to you more than you could imagine.

Because of the way media and certain television networks have portrayed the lifestyle of pageantry, there is a preconceived notion of what a pageant girl is like. How do you think that being a part of the Miss America Organization you are able to break that barrier?
I think that by educating people of what the Miss America Organization has already done for me. I have become a stronger, more confident, compassionate and positive person. Pageantry has given me the skills to take on any interview that comes my way. On top of all the internal growth, getting scholarship money to further my education is an added bonus.

Regardless of who wins the title of Miss Massachusetts’
Outstanding Teen, what is one goal which you have for them, which you hope they will accomplish during their reign?
My goal for the winner is that they savor every moment of their year. Take every opportunity to speak about your platform and advocate for others whenever possible. Laugh a lot. Give lots of hugs and be the best version of you.

Bravura is an artistic word for exceptional. Tell our readers what make you “bravura.”
I am bravura because of the drive I have not only in school but in everyday life. I am that girl who stays late at sports practices and goes in early for extra help. I may not be perfect at everything but I am well rounded and I work hard for all that I have accomplished. I am bravura because of my constant drive to improve and better myself.

Where can fans follow you on social media?
I can be followed on my Instagram @missbostonsot, and on Facebook @MissBostonTeen! Follow my crazy and amazing year as Miss Boston’s Outstanding Teen as I prepare for states!

Do you have any final words for the readers of Bravura Magazine?
The term “pageant girl” is not a real term in my eyes. Sure, I participate in scholarship pageants but this by no means is the only thing that defines me. I am a scholar student, athlete, dancer, chef, friend, daughter, sister, and so much more. Women in this organization are not only involved in pageants they do so much more than that, and this is why women in the Miss America Organization are so successful. They do so much more than anyone may realize.
